FAQs

How do you get the resin to stay? Doesn't resin flow off the wood?

Yes, using a pouring technique, the resin will flow off. If there is sufficient resin, it will keep looking to level out. I use a brush and limit the amount of resin on the surface. Once I start 'layering up' I am more careful as the resin will settle in the low areas. It is easier to add more resin, more difficult to take some off!!

How do you do the bright vibrant works?

For my 'Visual Harmony' Collection, I have layered resin upon resin, using transparent vibrant colours. A timely process, but well worth it!!

What is the base or substrate you are working on?

All my boards, unless otherwise stipulated, are custom made by a fabulous business in Auckland, Frames by Daniel. They are top quality made, using quality products and superb care.

What resins do you use?

I use mainly two brands (there are many!), both formulated specifically for art. Just Resin, a product created by artists based in Australia. They have built up a brand that also includes tints and pastes, which I also use, and I have found the resin works for me. The other brand, Mastercast, is imported from the UK, however this is readily available from NZ distributors.

How do you get such bright vibrant colours?

This is achieved through using bright tints, such as neons, and these are formulated for resin. Additionally, the layering process adds to the vibrancy.

How are your resin shapes all so consistent?

I use a handmade template and this is what guides me. You may see the odd coloured pencil outline underneath, and this adds to the authenticity of the piece.

How long does it take to create a piece?

Depending on how big the piece is, and if I have the right wood base size, usually 4-6 weeks. Smaller pieces can be less time, but the process is the same. As a general rule, usually one layer per day.

Do you have any pieces in any Galleries in my town?

Locally in Napier, Creative Arts Napier have a couple of pieces in their retail space. In Wellington, I am super excited to be a part of the ORA Gallery whanau, so call in or you can browse and shop online.

If I want a piece of art created for me, a commission piece, what do I do?

First off, figure out how big/small you would like it. Drop me an email and we can sort out the colours you like, and in what style. A commission piece would usually start with a 50% deposit, and balance on completion. This comes with NZ wide free shipping!!

I would like a piece of your work, but I live local. Can I pick up??

Yes of course. Once you have selected your piece and completed the checkout process, send me a quick email so I don't ship it out. The only reason this option is not publicly available on the site, is that I work from home. I thought it was okay to keep some privacy for my family.

Can I hang my new resin piece outside or in the bathroom?

No not outside. The elements are too harsh for the resin I use. I used to say yes the bathroom is okay, however, I have had one piece react unfavourably and so to avoid that in the future, please avoid hanging in the bathroom.
